“Well ever since the open day event started, a group of us always wanted to do a fun, upbeat dance to showcase our love for dance and performance. Our very first open day we did an old school jazz choreography to Bruno Mars’ song, Treasure. This year we wanted to continue the tradition and we did a broadway jazz performance to hair spray’s the new girl in town. When Qistina (Cendana ’17) and I choreographed we wanted something that was fun and groovy and while we wanted our audience to have fun watching, we as dancers wanted to have fun performing it too. Since it was open day and it was meant to attract students to Yale-NUS, we felt like we should do what we like and focus on a choreography that brings out the performance more than the technique. I was quite proud of all the dancers, we included solos for everyone and they really went all out. It’s especially heartening when their passion for dance shines regardless of experience. I hope that dancers in this school continue to remember that spirit of performance in any future dance endeavors.” — Shanice Stanislaus (Cendana ‘17)
