Contemporary dance is arguably one of the most liberating styles of dance! In the Contemporary/Modern Dance Class, you’ll have the opportunity to learn and hone skills in release work, floor work, inversions, musicality, and performance in combinations that are both fun and challenging. The class will draw from classical technique, beginning each class with basic pliés, footwork, across the floor, and strengthening exercises. By the end of each class, you’ll come out having invigorated both your body and mind. Build on combinations each week that will all come together in 1 or 2 pieces of choreography to be performed at sYNCD’s end of the year showcase!

Have you ever watched the movie, Step Up or the show, So You Think You Can Dance and actually wish you could just replicate or even better, create your own cool, funky moves? Here’s your chance. Hip hop is a street dance style that was started in New York City and remained one of the most popular dance genres ever since. It is generally very upbeat, exciting and energizing to dance and watch. It incorporates a variety of other styles within it such as Breaking, Locking, Popping, Harlem Shake. The genre has also given rise to new styles like Jazz-Funk, Lyrical Hiphop. But what makes Hip hop so different from other styles is that it is often ‘freestyle’ or improvisational in nature and dance crews often take part in “battles” where they dance off in freestyle! It is definitely a great way to get up and groove to the music with those killer moves that you’ll explore and enjoy! We are excited to offer Hip hop classes to our YNC community and would be starting off with some basic techniques and choreography. Open to all and no dance experience required — Let’s just have some fun!

Jazz finds its roots in the early 20th century, when African-American, European and Caribbean art forms influenced popular music and ballet to create a unique fusion style. With the rise of musical theatre, jazz came to the Great White Way and became a staple for choreographers on and off Broadway such as Jerome Robbins, Bob Fosse, and Gene Kelly.

Each class is open to all levels and will include a barre warm-up, centre work stretching and isolations, and a short combination. For those new to dancing, Broadway Jazz is a fun way to start and we hope you’ll join us!
