Light & Flight: Singapore Dance Open Championship
SDOC2014-1

Joan (Cendana ’17) dancing the waltz in the finals of the Singapore Dance Open Championship

Last November 30, 2014, Joan (Cendana ’17) competed at the Singapore Dance Open Championships, bagging the Gold at the Solo Waltz and Silver at the Waltz-Tango event.

“The competition was insane; it was such a blur. There were competitors from all over the world–Russia, Slovenia, Italy, Australia, Philippines, Indonesia, China, Hong Kong and more. There were gowns and tailcoats everywhere. There just was not enough time to process everything. Warm-up after warm-up, round after round, it was crazy. Above all, I’m so happy I got to share the experience with my dad.

A few nights before the big day, while we were taking a break from the training, my partner asked me why I decided to take up ballroom dancing out of all the possible other outlets that I could have chosen, out of all the things I already had on my plate. I could not give him an answer at that time. And then there was this moment during our performance of the final round when I leaned back and all I could see were the ceiling lights in rainbow colours. I smiled, and in the periphery, I could see my partner looking at me, smiling too. That was when I found the answer to the question my partner had posed. That was when I knew, win or lose, that moment was one I would remember for quite some time. Winning then was really just a /bonus, because that moment, wow, that moment was the real reward.”
